Lucas Powell is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist musician based in metro-Detroit. Inspired by artists like Noah Gundersen, Pinegrove, The War on Drugs, and Sufjan Stevens, Lucas uses autobiographical storytelling to invite the audience to collectively sing, celebrate, grieve, and introspect.

In 2024, Powell teamed up with producer Jake Rye (Michigander, Stay Outside) for two singles, Lose You On My Own and Let Me Down. Both songs highlighted Powell’s diverse songwriting, balancing themes of gaslighting and grief packaged as indie rock anthems.

Powell released his sophomore full-length record titled A Ten Pound Bag of Rice on May 12th, 2023. Inspired by the 2007 film Into the Wild, the album uses the story of Chris McCandless and his fatal trek into the Alaskan wilderness as an analogy for spiritual deconstruction. Contributors included Mitchell Pysz (Falls Creek), Josie Palmer (Vaega), and Benjamin Rose (Kat and The Hurricane). The album was self-produced with all post-production handled by Dan Zasadny.

A Ten Pound Bag of Rice was preceded by 4 singles, Victimless Crime (August 2022), The Score (March 2023), Great White North (April 2023), and Simple Truth and the Little Things (May 2023). Powell’s debut full-length album Michigan was released in August 2021. In the past two years, his music has been featured on Audiotree Presents and Kickstand Production playlists, and has been played on WYCE Grand Rapids as well as many other Michigan indie stations.

Powell has played numerous live performances across Michigan and the upper midwest including Lansing’s Grewal Hall and two historic Detroit venues, The Magic Bag and The Pike Room. In 2021, Powell was featured in Old Main Record’s “BareBones” virtual music festival, and has opened for Vista Kicks, Yellow Ostrich, bugsy, and local legends Frontier Ruckus.

“What resulted is Powell’s cathartic new single…which openly explores that heartbreak and disbelief alongside emotive indie-rock instrumentation.”
